What our readers carried home in October 2024

October is the month our reading list and our shopping list start to overlap. The evenings get shorter, the house gets used more, and everyone suddenly notices the corner of the hallway they have been ignoring since June. That is roughly the shape of what our readers shared this month: a little outdoor, a little indoor, and one plush toy nobody expected to be talking about.

The outdoor half

Hunting season opening gave Moon-Phase Deer Hunting an audience it does not have in April. It is a slim, opinionated book about timing, and several readers said they bought it less for the theory than for the tables in the back. In the same spirit, the Caviness twin-stripe canoe paddle made the list. Fall paddling is quieter and colder, and a spare paddle is the sort of thing people finally buy after a season of borrowing one.

The indoor half

Three home items carried the month. The Flipside cork bulletin board showed up in a lot of home office and classroom conversations, usually paired with a plan to get school papers off the refrigerator door. The Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE round bin is a commercial product that home readers keep adopting for leaves, recycling, and garage storage, and it has the kind of reputation that survives a decade of yard work. And the MCS Ezra large wall mirror was our reader favorite for a dim entryway, which is a very October problem to have.

Two smaller things

Parents kept mentioning Natrol Kids melatonin gummies as the clocks got ready to change. We are not in the business of giving medical advice, so the only thing we will add is the same thing our readers added: talk to your pediatrician first, and keep it in a cabinet with a latch.

The surprise of the month was the World of Nintendo Star Fox plush. It is small, it is soft, and it is exactly the kind of item that goes quiet for months and then sells out fast when a holiday list gets written. Several readers bought it in October specifically to have it put away before December.

What the month tells us

Looking at the whole list, October reads like a transition rather than a theme. Half of it is people finishing something outdoors, half is people preparing an interior for the four months they are about to spend inside it. That pattern shows up every year, and it is a useful reminder for anyone building a wish list: the things you want in November are usually easiest to find in October, while everyone else is still thinking about costumes.

If you are new here, a note on how this list works. We do not rank by popularity alone, and we do not chase whatever is loudest that week. These are items our readers actually bought, told us about, and in most cases still had opinions about a month later. That is a slower way to build a list, but it ages better.

One practical note before you go. Availability on seasonal items like the paddle and the bin tends to thin out as fall goes on, so if something here is on your list, it is worth watching now rather than in December.
