What sold out fastest in May 2025
May is the month the outside of the house becomes usable again, and our readers shopped accordingly. This was a short list, but a coherent one, and for once everything on it is going to the same place: the patio.
Gathering supplies
Solo Jazz design waxed paper cold cups were the surprise of the month, and the notes attached to them were pure nostalgia. The jazz pattern is a design that people either do not notice at all or recognize instantly from every waiting room of their childhood. Waxed paper cups also hold up to ice better than thin plastic and do not sweat onto a table, which is the actual reason readers kept reordering them.
Cleanup came next. The SPARTA large plastic scrub brush is a commercial kitchen tool that readers adopted for grill grates, coolers, and patio furniture. Stiff bristles, a handle you can put weight on, and no electronics to fail.
The quiet one
Salada decaf green tea made the list on the strength of iced tea season. Several readers brew it strong, chill it overnight, and keep a pitcher in the door of the refrigerator from May until September. The decaf version exists so you can drink it at four in the afternoon and still sleep.
Two items for people with specific hobbies
The T-Rex Grilles billet grille is exactly what it sounds like, and it went to readers in the middle of a car project who had been waiting for weather warm enough to work outside. Spring is when driveway projects restart, and trim and cosmetic parts move first because they are the fun part.
And the Medicos Super Strap collection blind box was the month's collectible. Blind boxes are a category we have complicated feelings about, since the appeal is built on not knowing what you are getting. Our readers who buy them are clear-eyed about it: they buy one, not a case, and they treat it as an inexpensive small pleasure rather than an investment. That seems like the right way to handle them.
Reading the month
What we notice about May lists is how much of the spending is on things that get used up. Cups, tea, brushes. These are not acquisitions, they are supplies for a season of having people over, and the households that plan for them in early May spend the rest of the summer not running to a store on a Saturday morning.
If you host at all, the single best thing you can do this month is make one restocking pass and then stop thinking about it. Everything else on this list is somebody's hobby, and hobbies are supposed to be irrational.
