January 2026: the reset list

January arrived and our readers went straight to the laundry room, the entryway, and the back deck. There is nothing aspirational on this month's list, and after six weeks of gifting that feels about right.

The laundry reset

Gain with Aroma Boost liquid laundry detergent led the month. January produces an unusual volume of laundry: guest bedding, coats that have been worn daily for a month, and the tablecloth somebody spilled on. Readers buying the large format were nearly all restocking rather than trying something new, which is how detergent works in most households. You find one you like in your twenties and you defend it forever.

The entryway again

The Guardian Platinum indoor wiper floor mat returned, as it does every winter. We have now featured a version of this mat in three separate January lists, which is either a sign of a genuinely good product or a sign that our community shares a single hallway. Commercial wiper mats handle salt and slush in a way that decorative mats simply do not, and the readers who switch never switch back.

The deferred outdoor job

the Star Brite teak cleaning kit was the most interesting purchase of the month. Teak cleaner in January means one of two things: somebody in a warm climate is doing boat maintenance in the off season, or somebody in a cold climate is planning ahead for spring and buying while nobody is competing for it. Both groups wrote in, and both were pleased with themselves.

The small stuff

Collectible bag clips carried over from December, with the Godfather series one clip, the Trigun Stampede series one clip, and the Marvel Halloween series one clip all moving in the first half of the month. Post-holiday is when the leftovers of a collectible line become findable again, and the people who wanted a specific series rather than a random one tend to shop exactly now.

The January pattern

Every January list we have published looks like this: consumables, one entryway or weather item, one thing bought early for a season that has not started, and a tail of small leftovers from December. It is the least exciting month of our year and probably the most useful.

If you are planning your own year, the teak kit is the one to learn from. Buying seasonal maintenance supplies in the opposite season is the closest thing to a free advantage that ordinary shopping offers, and it costs nothing but a shelf and a bit of patience.

A closing note on the mats, because readers ask every winter. The thing that makes a commercial wiper mat work is the density of the pile and the backing that keeps it from sliding, and both of those are also what makes it heavy and awkward to shake out. If you buy one, plan to vacuum it rather than lift it, and give it a proper wash at the end of the season before it goes into storage.

Otherwise, January did what January does. Nothing on this list will impress anybody, and every item on it is still in use.
