June 2026: the household caught up on itself

June was a maintenance month with a sense of humor. Our readers bought robots to clean the floor, gloves to work the garden, chews for the dog, and one item that a surprising number of families were united by.

The floor

the Kilgone G20 robot vacuum was the month's largest purchase and the one with the most detailed reader notes. The advice that came through most consistently was about preparation rather than the machine: robots work brilliantly in a house that has been robot-proofed, and poorly in one that has not. Cords, loose rugs, and the pile of shoes by the door are what determine whether the thing runs happily every day or gets stuck under a chair twice a week.

The garden

nitrile-coated garden gloves in a three pack were the sensible buy of the month. The three pack matters. One pair is always damp, one is always lost, and the third is the one you actually use.

Carlisle reusable plastic dinner plates came from readers setting up an outdoor eating routine for the summer. Commercial-grade reusable plates are the middle ground between breaking real dishes on a patio and generating a bin bag of disposables every weekend.

The dog

Scoochie braided esophagus sticks were bought by readers looking for a longer-lasting natural chew. As always with chews, our community's advice is to supervise, to size the chew to the dog, and to take it away when it gets small enough to swallow.

The one everyone had feelings about

the Terminator stainless steel lice comb produced more sympathetic replies than anything we have featured this year. End of the school year, camps starting, and a rite of passage that no parent enjoys. The readers who had been through it were generous with advice, and the single most repeated piece was that a proper metal comb with long tines does in one evening what a plastic comb does in four.

Small and personal

an Oceane flat blend makeup sponge rounded out the month, and the picture book Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message went to families and teachers building a summer reading shelf.

The June read

Every June list we publish is about a household absorbing a change of routine. School ends, everyone is home, the floor gets dirtier, the dog gets more attention, and somebody catches something at camp. This one was simply more honest about it than most.

One last thought about robot vacuums, since it is the purchase readers most often ask us about. The households that love theirs are the ones that changed a habit to suit the machine, usually by keeping the floor clear at night so it can run before anyone is awake. The households that are ambivalent bought the robot expecting it to change their habits for them. The machine is the same in both houses.

July is next, and if past years hold, it will be books and grill accessories in roughly equal measure.
