July 2026: picture books and fishing line
This was the most literary summer list we have run. Four of the eight items our readers bought in July were books for children, which tells you a great deal about what a summer holiday actually looks like from inside a house.
The summer reading shelf
The Reading Fun with Curious George boxed set led the month, bought by parents building a daily reading habit into a summer with no structure. Right behind it, Mother Goose Club: Favorite Nursery Rhymes went to a younger age group, and Disney Winnie the Pooh: I Love You Winnie the Pooh was bought roughly half as a gift and half as a bedtime staple.
The fourth, Trace, came from a slightly older readership building a summer stack for a child who has moved past picture books but is not ready to be handed a novel with no pictures at all.
The outdoor half
Spiderwire DURA-4 braid fishing line was the most-bought non-book item. Mid-season is when line gets replaced, after a few months of sun and a couple of snags, and readers who fish regularly treat it as a routine consumable rather than a purchase.
a bristle free grill brush with a replaceable head was the practical pick. Bristle-free designs exist because loose wire bristles are a genuine hazard, and the replaceable head means the tool outlasts the scrubbing surface. Our readers have been steadily moving away from traditional wire brushes for several years now.
Travel and everyday
DK Eyewitness Top 10 Crete appeared from readers planning late summer travel, and we noted with some affection that guidebooks still sell in a world of phones, for the same reason paper maps do.
Freestyle Libre 2 waterproof covers were bought by readers managing continuous glucose monitors through a summer of swimming and sweating. It is an accessory rather than a medical device, and the practical note from our community is to test any adhesive on a small patch of skin first.
And the Hello Kitty and Friends collection closed out the list, bought for a rainy-afternoon rotation.
What July said
A summer list is really a schedule. Mornings with books, afternoons outside, and evenings at a grill. Our readers bought exactly that, in exactly that proportion, and the households that planned a reading routine in June were noticeably less frantic by the end of July.
A closing note for anyone buying braided line for the first time. Braid behaves differently from monofilament at the knot, and the most common complaint from new users is slippage rather than strength. Use a knot rated for braid, wet it before you draw it down, and check the first few fish carefully. The readers in our community who fish most are unanimous on this, and they were kind enough to say so without condescension.
