September 2026 opens the fall list

The first list of a new season is always a little tentative, and this one is no exception. Our readers spent September half in summer and half out of it, which is exactly what September is for.

The autumn shelf

Picking Apples and Pumpkins was the seasonal favorite, bought by families and by a number of teachers setting up an autumn reading corner. It is a straightforward picture book about an orchard visit, and it does what a good seasonal book does, which is make an ordinary weekend outing feel like an event to a four year old.

Two novels came alongside it: The Haunted Mesa from readers building an autumn stack of something atmospheric, and Nine Coaches Waiting, a mid-century suspense novel that a small and extremely devoted group of our readers recommends to everyone every year.

The table

an electric warming mat with adjustable temperature was the most practical purchase of the month and the one that will get the most use between now and January. Warming mats sit under serving dishes and keep food at temperature through a long meal, which is a problem every household rediscovers the first time it hosts in autumn.

Eco takeout containers carried over from August, still going to the meal prep contingent, who are the most organized people in our community by a wide margin.

Travel and everyday

VEKJ real time translation earbuds continued the trend we noted last month, bought for autumn travel. Our caution stands: excellent for a menu or a sign, limited in a noisy room, and not a replacement for learning a few phrases.

a fourteen karat gold wheat chain was the month's considered purchase, bought as a gift and as a replacement for a chain that had finally given out. Wheat chains are one of the more durable patterns, which is why readers who wear something daily keep coming back to them.

And one for the water

the SEAC Ghost hooded freediving wetsuit was the specialist item of the month, bought for the cooler water that is about to arrive. Late season is when serious divers buy, and it is another example of a category that is easiest to shop when everyone else has moved on.

What comes next

The next three months will look familiar to anyone who has read these lists for a while: gloves and mats, then game tables and gifts, then a very quiet January. Our readers are already ahead of it, as usual. If there is one thing this community is consistently good at, it is buying a season before the season arrives.
